My eyes opened to the harsh reality of civilization's
progress in
late 1995. While I was aware of the damages brought on, by the natural
progression of man, it did not hit home. Then one day, I just awoke
and had this little voice in my head saying "Write"..Write about
what you see and your opinions. Let your words speak out about these
things before it truly is too late to change and treasure the gifts
the Earth has provided for mankind. Tell stories that inspire and
encourage others to rediscover their bond with Mother Earth.
I have always felt a connection to the earth, much like the kinship
the ancient Vikings and Native Americans shared. That bond was
enhanced by my grandmother's teachings. From her, I learned to
recognize animals by their tracks, canning techniques, tips on
how to preserve food, and by her example, respect for the earth.
So it really is no surprise to me that as I grow older, my bond with
Mother Nature and the Earth has become stronger and I feel that
it is necessary for me to speak out about some enviromental issues.
In this excerpt, the old woman is a personification of the Earth,
speaking out to the main character about the wounds she has received
throughout the years. The excerpt is spoken in first person, because
the main character is retelling a dreamlike sequence to her brother
and a friend.

"A Mother's Voice"...
..."Why are you crying?" I asked the old woman.
"Because, my child, I am slowly dying from the poisons mankind, my
children, have created with the gifts I have given them throughout
the ages." She replied, tears flowing freely down Her wrinkled and
time worn face. "My children are destroying me with their silly,
childish games of who has more of what."
I stood looking out over the desert, seeing the ghostly images of
Her words. Chills ran through my body as I saw a glimpse of a future
possible, a future that the science fiction movies of the past only
hinted at. I knew then what She wanted from me...
A voice for Her pain, sadness, and anger...a voice to speak to Her
children for Her...a voice to start a movement towards mankind's
rediscovery of Her. So,
let's get busy, and NOT disapoint "HER!"
